Scholarship of tokyo university

To concentrate on your study, it is important to have a sufficient budget for the student life. The living cost is high in Tokyo. The average expenditure will be about 130,000 to 140,000 yen a month, provided that you rent a private room in Tokyo. You can obtain a work permit after your arrival, but the working hours are limited under the law. Therefore, we recommend you to be well prepared for your finance.

Please refer to the scholarships below. Most of the scholarships are applicable after enrollment, however, they are very competitive. There are few scholarships for Kenkyu-sei (research students). Except for Embassy recommended MEXT Scholarship, all scholarship information are provided at International Liaison Office.

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) Scholarship

• Embassy recommendation (Contact Office: The Embassy or Consulate of Japan in your home country)
  • Application in your home country.
  • The Embassy or consulate of Japan in your home country is responsible for this scholarship, holding different requirements and policy according to each country. Please note that the University of Tokyo DOES NOT provide any details and the application procedure is out on its own. Please inquire directly at the appropriate contact office in your country.
  • The scholarship covers the monthly stipend as well as the return airfare. You can also take an intensive Japanese course for the first six months after arrival, if required.
  • We highly recommend this scholarship.
• University recommendation
  • Application in your home country.
  • The applicant needs a strong recommendation from a professor of the University of Tokyo for the Japanese government's screening. Most applicants are selected on the basis of the agreement of academic exchange with the overseas university.
  • The application period is from January to February.
• Domestic application
  • Application after enrollment.
  • After enrollment, there is a chance to apply for the Government scholarship, however, the it is limited to one student from the Graduate School of Science.
  • The application period is around January.

• Monthly stipend
  • Graduate/Research students: 170,000 yen(first year), 160,000 yen(after second year)
  • Undergraduate students: 134,000 yen (first year), 126,000 yen (after second year)

Private Scholarships

Monthly stipend: About 50,000 - 150,000 yen

  • Information is available at ILO. There are about 15 foundations providing scholarships.
• University recommendation
  • Application after enrollment.
  • There are about 45 foundations, setting wide variations of application requirements by age, major, and so on. The applicants will be screened in the University of Tokyo in the first stage, therefore, it will be very competitive.

The scholarships are only for international students who belong to the School of Science of the University of Tokyo. A certain level of Japanese language ability is necessary to apply for private scholarships. Graduate School of Business Coursework Scholarships

The Graduate School of Business is pleased to announce a new scholarship scheme for international students.

Each scholarship covers full tuition on the final subjects of study in one of the following GSB masters courses.

Application criteria

The applicant must

• be eligible for admission to a master level program at the Graduate School of Business in Wollongong or Sydney

• be making his or her first application to study in the Graduate School of Business after 19 October 2007

• be the holder of a bachelor degree with a minimum GPA equivalence to an Australian bachelor degree of 2.75 (on a 4-point scale)

• be commencing his or her first course at the Graduate School of Business in Autumn session 2008 (at Wollongong campus) or intake A or B (at the Sydney campus)

• be an international student

• not receive any advanced standing/credit exemption into the master degree studies at the Graduate School of Business

Application procedure

The applicant must

• apply for the scholarship before 14th December 2007

• complete and submit the scholarship form together with the course application form, including evidence of graduation (in the form of a recognised certificate of graduation) and a full transcript of studies undertaken as part of the bachelor course.

The application can be submitted directly or through an accredited agent or representative of the University of Wollongong.

All applications will be assessed by the scholarship committee, and applicants will be advised of the outcome by email on 21 December 2007.

In order to be eligible to take up the scholarship, the successful applicants

• must have maintained a 60% average in each semester of study at the Graduate School of Business

• must not have taken a leave of absence and must have maintained a full-time study load during each semester/term of study

• must hold international student status at the time of the award

Awarding of the scholarship

• the scholarship will be confirmed following the release of results in the penultimate (second last) semester/term of study, and prior to the commencement of his or her last semester/term of study

• awardees will receive the scholarship in the form of a discounted tuition fee in the final session of study.

Other conditions

1. The scholarship must be taken up in the session of study for which it is awarded, and cannot be transferred to another student, or deferred; nor redeemed for a cash payment or rebate or in-kind payment.

2. The determination of equivalence of the staus and GPA equivalence of the applicant’s bachelor degree is solely that of the University of Wollongong, and is not subject to appeal.

Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program

Awards available to students from other Commonwealth countries for graduate study in Canada

The Government of Canada offers scholarships as part of the Commonwealth Scholarship Plan (CSP). These scholarships are tenable at recognized public Canadian institutions and affiliated research institutes only.

The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (CCSP) is designed to provide opportunities for students of other Commonwealth countries to pursue research and studies in Canada.

The Scholarships are intended for men and women of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make a significant contribution to their own countries on their return from study in Canada.

The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program is funded by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) which also determines the number of scholarships available each year. The agency responsible for financial and administrative matters is the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE).

The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Plan is undergoing changes. The new program is designed to support the Government's strategy in various regions with an approach more targeted to the thematic priorities for Canadian policy and to increase aid effectiveness. The objective is to increase development impact in human capacity building through sustainable bilateral and institutional relationships within various fields by 1) contributing towards increase of exchanges between Canadian post-secondary institutions and regional counterparts and 2) providing foreign graduate students with the opportunity to have access to academic mentors and academic research networks in Canada. These new programs replace former Master’s and Doctoral awards.

International scholarship

Nearly all applications to graduate school require at least 3 letters from individuals who can discuss your competencies in a coherent way and recommend that you be admitted to graduate school. Many students find that it is mot difficult to select persons to approach for letters of recommendation. Others aren't sure of who to approach -- or if they have a potential recommender at all. Regardless of your situation, plan ahead.

Who will you approach? Who will you consider? Remember the main criteron of the letter of recommendtion: It must provide a comprehensive and positive evaluation of your abilities and aptitude. It should not be surprising that letters from professors are highly valued by admissions committees. However, the best letters are written by faculty who know you, from whom you have taken muliple classes and/or have completed substantial projects and/or have recieved very positive evaluations.

Professors provide insight into your academic competencies and aptitude as well as personality characteristics that may contribute to your potential to succeed in graduate school, such as motivation, conscientiousness, and timeliness.

Some students include a letter from an employer. Letters from employers are useful if you are working in a field that is related to that which you intend to study. However, even a letter from an employer in an unrelated field can be useful to your application if he or she discusses skills and competencies that will contribute to your success in graduate school, such as the abilty to read and integrate information in order to draw conclusions, lead others, or carry out complex tasks in a timely and competent fashion. Essentially it's all about spin -- spinning the material so that it matches what committees are looking for.

An effective recommendation letter is writtn by someone who meets some of the following criteria:

* Is aware of your field of interest and the schools you are applying to.
* Is able to evaluate your performance in your field of interest.
* Is able to discuss your personal characteristics
* Is able to discuss your capacity to work with others
* Can discuss your leadership skills[/li
* Can evaluate your level of professionalism (e.g., punctuality, efficiency, assertivness)
* Can discuss your academic skills -- not simply experience, but evaluate your potential to succeed in graduate-level study
* Evaluates you positively relative to others
* Has some recognition and whose judgment is highly valued within the field.
* Is able to write a good reference letter (i.e., is literate).

Many students become nervous when they see this list. Remember that no one no one person will meet all of these criteria, so don't fret or feel bad. Instead, consider all of the people who you might approach and attempt to compose a balanced panel of reviewers. Seek individuals who will collectively fulfill as many of the above criteria as possible.

The biggest mistake most students make in the recommendation letter-phase of the graduate school application is to not think about who to approach and simply settle for whoever is available. This is not the time to settle, choose the easiest path, or be impulsive. Take the time and make the effort to consider all of the possiblities -- each professor you have had and all persons you have come into contact with (e.g., employers, internship supervisors, supervisors from settings in which you have volunteered). Don't rule any one out at first, just make a long list. After you have created an exhausted list, rule out those who you know will not give you a positive recommendation. The next step is to determine how many criteria those remaining on your list might fulfill. And move on from there to begin approaching potential referees.
